Booths supermarket opens at MediaCityUK
Posted: Oct 19, 2011
COUNTRYSIDE food retailer Booths opens its first urban store at MediaCityUK, adding to Salford’s concerning supermarket growth.
Family-owned supermarket Booths opened the doors to its 27th store today at the Salford Quays site. The two-floor store includes a number of fresh food counters and a generous selection of wines and ales.
Ian Payne, assistant store manager of Booths at MediaCityUK, described the urban concept as an “exciting adventure for Booths.”
“I think the area itself both the people at Media City and the areas of Manchester are very much food-orientated. The quality of our food and service lends itself to that. We will be very successful,” said Payne.
The store has created 100 new jobs and it will cater for 1000s of workers, students, residents and visitors around the Quays.
However, Booths new store will be sandwiched between retail developments by supermarket giants in Salford.
Scott Neal, marketing manager of LPC Living has confirmed that a Morrisons is due to open in early December at their new development site on Trafford Road. Just over a mile away from the Booths store.
Approval has also been given for two new Tesco Extra stores to be built in Eccles and Pendleton by the end of 2012.
Booths stated: “We have a number of reasons why we stand out amongst our competitors. One quality of service, quality of product, provenance, and we are an ethical company as well with regard to the way we work with our suppliers and the relationships we have with our customers.”
Too many supermarkets?
Some residents and businesses fear the city is turning into a monopoly of supermarkets. Locals have expressed their concerns on Salford City Council’s discussion board.
Jean Coward from Salford said: “Town centres are being killed by the numbers of supermarkets around. I admire the shops in Eccles for really trying hard; they hold really good farmers markets as well. Tesco seems to hold councils in their pockets.” Salford city council was unavailable for comment.
Booths asserted that they are supporting local businesses by sourcing from suppliers in the North West. Payne said: “We are using a company in Manchester that bakes our cupcakes. Wherever we can source local products and where we can use them in those stores we aim to do so.”
Booths is advertising on billboards around Salford to direct consumers to their new store.
I had never even heard of Booth's until they recently moved in to Media City. I called in one day to get a sandwich and found one of my all time fav ciders - Taylors Gold made by Sheppy's. I may have to pay them a visit and get some!
